Post-Secondary Underfunded in Alberta
Although Calgary’s access to skilled labour is a cornerstone of its productivity, alarmingly, base operating grants to Alberta’s post-secondary institutions increased by a mere 2% in 2002/03. Inflation for Calgary stood at about 3% for the same period so the operating grant increase was more than wiped out by inflation. Enrolment increases at Calgary’s places of higher learning meant students and faculty once again had to try to do more with less. The reality is that Alberta government's investment in PSE is not keeping up with increases in inflation let alone increases in enrolment.
